A Whole New Range of Aircraft to Fly!
To be able to operate the aircraft that have what is known as a “conventional undercarriage”, or a configuration that includes a tailwheel rather than a nose wheel, you will need a Tailwheel Undercarriage Endorsement (TWU). Some of the aircraft that adopt a tailwheel undercarriage configuration include a variety of sport and aerobatic aircraft, vintage aircraft and warbirds, bush planes, and utility aircraft. The majority of agricultural aircraft utilise tailwheels, making this endorsement a necessity if you want to include that as a career option.
Stick and Rudder Flying
As well as opening up a whole new world of available aircraft, a Tailwheel Undercarriage Endorsement is a great challenge and will improve your overall “stick and rudder” flying skills, especially landing and handling an aircraft on the ground. You will build far greater awareness of Centre of Gravity, slide-slipping and crosswind take-offs and landings. This Tailwheel Undercarriage Endorsement (TWU) course is designed to teach you all of the techniques and skills required to safely fly and handle an aircraft with a tailwheel. Training is conducted in our Super Decathlon 8KCAB aircraft, which is also great for Aerobatics.

1. Prerequisite & Orientation
To complete the Tailwheel Undercarriage Endorsement (TWU) course, you need to hold a valid RPL, PPL or CPL. Your orientation will include an introduction to the airport, airspace, aircraft fleet, LTF processes and policies, and our facilities.

2. Tailwheel Undercarriage Ground Theory
The ground-based theory component includes detailed lessons on tailwheel behaviour, gyroscopic and torque reaction, and crosswind handling

3. Tailwheel Undercarriage Flight Training
Practical flight includes lessons on aircraft familiarisation and taxi procedures; normal, flapless, short-field and crosswind take-off and landings; three-point landings and two-point "Wheeler" landings; and bounce recovery and ground loop avoidance

4. Assessment Flight
Assessment flight with an instructor where you will demonstrate your performance of all knowledge and skills learnt during ground theory and practical flight training.
