Become a Professional Pilot

Are you ready to start your journey to becoming a professional pilot? Obtaining a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) is your ticket to an aviation career, as it will allow you to take on paid flying work as a professional pilot.

To commence this course you must first hold a Private Pilot Licence (PPL). You will build on the knowledge of your previous training, and learn more advanced flight techniques and procedures. You will begin with CPL theory, and once you have passed your CASA theory exams you will move on to practical flight training in a Diamond DA40 aircraft. Following practical training, you will need to pass the CPL flight test to receive your Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL).

A Career For The Skies

Working as a pilot is an exciting and rewarding career, and there are a number of different pathways available to pilots with a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL).

Aside from working towards a career with a commercial airline, there are also opportunities in a range of different industries including tourism, agriculture, cargo, passenger transport and more. You can also look at becoming a Flight Instructor, which is a fantastic way to build hours while you earn, and set yourself up to achieve your professional pilot dreams.

  • 1. Prerequisite Requirements

There is no prerequisite for this course.

  • 2. CPL Ground School

Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) training will be separated into 2 parts - theory and flight training. Students need to finish RPL, PPL and CPL theory exams via online theory courses or formal classes. The CPL theory exams must be completed within a two-year time frame.

  • 3. Build Pilot-In-Command Hours

You are required a total of 150 hours with 70 flown solo as a legal minimum. In order to gain the required 70 hours of Pilot-In-Command time, you will be given planned navigation exercises.

  • 4. CPL Flight Training Module 1

This is the first training module, during which you will train in the Cessna 172, Diamond DA40, or Sling 2 LSA aircraft. Every new exercise will be demonstrated by your experienced flight instructor, and you will enhance your skills through practice. You will learn how to control the plane, perform take-offs and landings, and handle emergency situations.

  • 5. CPL Flight Training Module 2

You must complete CPL Flight Training Module 1 before beginning CPL Flight Training Module 2. This module includes navigation training following the PPL syllabus, where you will learn both fundamental and advanced navigation. With assistance and guidance from your instructor, you will plan and execute several navigational flights throughout your training.

  • 6. CPL Flight Training Module 3

You must complete CPL Flight Training Module 2 before starting CPL Flight Training Module 3. Module 3 includes 20 hours of VFR cross-country flight time as pilot-in-command. This includes a cross-country flight totalling at least 540 km (300 NM), with full-stop landings at two different aerodromes from the departure aerodrome.

  • 7. CPL Flight Test

After ongoing instruction and practice, you will be ready to be put forward for your CPL flight tests. In a flight test with a CASA approved Testing Officer, you will demonstrate all that you have learnt through your flight training. If they are satisfied with your knowledge and skills, you will be awarded your Commercial Pilot Licence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Learn to Fly FAQ section! Here, we've gathered the most frequently asked questions about our CPL Training Program to help you navigate your journey towards becoming a CPL pilot. Our aim is to provide you with the essential information you need to begin this exciting adventure with confidence. For further assistance, feel free to contact us.

  • 1. Is it necessary to complete the RPL and PPL before starting the CPL training program?

This CPL training program covers the full RPL, PPL, and CPL syllabus. CPL-1 covers RPL training syllabus; CPL-2 covers PPL training syllabus; and CPL-3 covers CPL training syllabus. If you’ve already completed your RPL, you can begin from CPL-2. If you’ve completed your PPL, you can start from CPL-3.

  • 2. What is the difference between this program and the Diploma of Aviation (CPL - Aeroplane)?

In terms of flight training, this program is the same as the Diploma of Aviation (CPL – Aeroplane). However, it offers greater flexibility. There is no fixed timetable, you can schedule your flights based on your availability. You also have the option to self-study the theory instead of attending scheduled theory classes. Additionally, there are no diploma exams or homework requirements. Please note, though, that this program does not offer access to VET Student Loans or a student visa.

  • 3. This CPL training package includes 157 flying hours. Will I be able to obtain my CPL after completing this training?

The package includes 157 flying hours in total, which meets the minimum requirement set by our CPL syllabus for students eligible to take the CPL flight test. This includes 70 hours of solo flying time. However, it's important to understand that while 157 hours is the minimum, most students typically require between 165 to 175 hours to complete their CPL training.

As individual progress varies, students may achieve their license with different amounts of flying hours. The package covers the initial 157 flying hours. If additional hours are needed beyond this, they will be charged on a Pay-As-You-Go basis.

  • 4. Can I study this as an international student?

This program takes over 60 weeks to complete. If you are an international student and require a student visa, you will need to enrol in the Diploma of Aviation (CPL – Aeroplane), as only this course allows us to issue a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for your visa application.

  • 5. Do you offer accommodation for international students?

Yes, we do. Please contact us and let us know your intended check-in and check-out dates, we'll promptly inform you about availability.

  • 6. Can I use the CPL to fly in my home country?

Yes, the CASA CPL is an ICAO license, recognized in all ICAO member countries. You can convert your CASA CPL and use it in any ICAO country. For specific conversion procedures, please consult your local aviation authority.
