Affordable pilot training. Your journey starts here.
Whether you are training toward a possible career in aviation or looking to fly just for fun, a Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) should be one of your first goals.
During the recreational pilot training course, you will learn the fundamentals of how to fly and safely land an aircraft through practical flying lessons and ground-based theory lessons, before flying solo and completing the RPL flight test.
A Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) will allow you to carry up to three passengers and fly within 25 nautical miles of your departure airport, in any CASA registered aircraft, with a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 1,500kgs.
The flight training you have completed during this course will count towards further pilot licence courses such as Private Pilot Licence or Commercial Pilot Licence. There is no need to start your training again.
Schedule a meeting with us to discuss your aviation goals and whether this is the best course for you.
Upon enrolment, you will receive a Training Starter Kit which contains all relevant course materials, access to shared resources, and details information on your course process. Your orientation will include an introduction to the airport, airspace, aircraft fleet, LTF processes and policies, and our facilities.
Theory sessions will cover aeronautical knowledge, aircraft general knowledge, flight rules, radio procedures, air law, basic meteorology and Moorabbin Airport procedures. The ground theory will be integrated into flight training. You will need to pass the RPL theory exam before conducting the RPL flight test.
The flight training you will undertake will be conducted in the Cessna 172, Diamond DA40 or Sling 2 LSA aircraft. Every new exercise is demonstrated by your experienced flight instructor, and you will improve your skills through practice.
When the instructor is confident in your abilities, you will be sent on your first solo flight. During your first solo, you will be in the aircraft on your own with your instructor watching from the ground. It’s an unforgettable experience and thrilling milestone for every pilot!
After ongoing instruction and practice, you will be ready to be put forward for your RPL flight test. In a flight test with a CASA approved Testing Officer, you will demonstrate all that you've learnt through your flight training.
Safe & Seamless Training.
Every student pilot should enjoy flying. Learn To Fly is constantly creating resources to help students do just that. Not only modern aircraft, but also facilities, experienced instructors and curriculums to create magical learning experiences and make every moment of air time worth it.

Welcome to the Learn to Fly FAQ section! Here, we've gathered the most frequently asked questions about our RPL Training Program to help you navigate your journey towards becoming an RPL pilot. In Australia, the PPL syllabus is divided into two parts: RPL and PPL. The RPL (Recreational Pilot Licence) is the first part, where you'll learn basic flying skills such as takeoff, landing, and performing your first solo flight. However, with an RPL, you are restricted to flying within 25NM of the departure airport and cannot conduct navigation.
The PPL (Private Pilot Licence) is the second part, where you'll learn navigation skills, including how to create and execute a flight plan. With a PPL, you can fly anywhere in Australia.
You must start with the RPL training if you want to obtain a PPL, as you'll need to master basic flying skills before moving on to navigation. Some schools may offer a combined RPL and PPL program, allowing you to skip the RPL flight test and proceed directly to PPL training. However, this approach can make the PPL flight test longer and more challenging, as it may still include RPL-level skills like precautionary searches, increasing the difficulty and the risk of failing the test.
We recommend completing both the RPL and PPL flight tests separately to ensure you’re well-prepared and to increase your chances of success.
The 25 flying hours included in the package meet the minimum requirement set by CASA for students eligible to take the RPL flight test. This minimum includes 5 hours of solo flying time. However, it's important to note that while 25 hours is the minimum, most students typically require between 33 to 40 hours to fully complete their RPL training.
As individual progress varies, students may achieve their license with different amounts of flying hours. The package covers the initial 25 flying hour. If additional hours are needed beyond this, they will be charged on a Pay-As-You-Go basis.
Yes, your RPL training will generally follow the syllabus outlined in the Training PDF. However, flight training is competency-based, meaning you must meet the required standards for each lesson before progressing to the next. If the required standards are not met, you may need to repeat the lesson. Additionally, weather conditions can impact the sequence of training, so if the weather isn't suitable for a particular lesson, we may need to adjust the schedule and conduct a different lesson earlier than planned.
The RPL training typically takes 6-8 weeks to complete.
If you purchase the RPL training package, it includes an online theory course. Once you enroll, we'll send you the login details so you can start learning from your home country. However, the CASA RPL exam can only be taken in Melbourne under supervision.
Please note that practical training still requires time, and even with the theory completed, you will need 6-8 weeks in Melbourne to finish the practical portion. If you can't complete the training in one visit, you can spread it across multiple visits, as the training won't expire.
Yes, we do. Please contact us and let us know your intended check-in and check-out dates, we'll promptly inform you about availability.
The RPL is an Australian license and cannot be converted or used in your home country.
