An Achievement You Will Never Forget

A pilot’s first solo flight will always be one of their most exhilarating and notable achievements – whether they have 20 or 5,000 command hours. All the feelings of success, excitement and accomplishment after piloting an aircraft solo for the first time are incredibly achievable with our Learn To Fly First Solo Flight Course. The program has been created specifically to develop your skills to a standard where your Flight Instructor feels comfortable sending you on your first solo flight.

Comprehensive Flight Training

This course follows the CASA syllabus. The comprehensive course syllabus combines 15 hours of professional flight training in the air with flight theory sessions and 3 hours of simulated flight training on the ground. After you’ve completed your first solo flight, you’ll be in a great position to take the next step towards either a pilot licence or even a career.

  • 1. Enrolment & Orientation

Upon enrolment, you will receive a Training Starter Kit which contains all relevant course materials, access to shared online resources, and detailed information on your course process. Your orientation will include an introduction to the airport, airspace, aircraft fleet, LTF processes and policies, and our facilities.

  • 2. Theory Training

Theory sessions will cover aeronautical knowledge, aircraft general knowledge, flight rules, radio procedures and Moorabbin Airport procedures. Ground Theory will be integrated into flight training. You will need to pass the Radio and Pre-Solo Air Legislation exams before going solo.

  • 3. Flight Training

With the guidance of an experienced flight instructor, you will learn the fundamental skills required to safely take off, fly, and land an aircraft. You will learn through demonstration and practice until your instructor feels that you are ready to fly solo.

  • 4. First Solo Flight

If your instructor feels that you are competent to fly the aircraft on your own, they will send you on your FIRST SOLO FLIGHT. Yes, that does mean you are flying on your own, with your instructor watching you from the ground. It’s an exciting moment for any pilot!

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Learn to Fly FAQ section! Here, we've compiled the most common questions about our First Solo Flight Training Program to guide you on your journey to becoming a pilot. Our goal is to equip you with the essential information needed to start this exciting adventure with confidence. If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us.

  • 1. The First Solo Flight Course includes 15 flying hours. Will I be able to complete my first solo flight within that time?

On average, students usually need 15-20 flying hours to reach their first solo flight. That’s why we include 15 hours in the package. However, since flight training is competency-based and individual progress can vary, you must meet the solo standard before your first solo flight to fly solo. The package covers the initial 15 flying hours, and any additional hours required beyond this will be charged on a Pay-As-You-Go basis.

  • 2. As an international student, how long should I plan for the first solo training?

The First Solo training usually takes around 3 weeks to complete, although this can vary based on weather conditions and individual student progress. While some students may finish within 2 weeks, others may require 3 weeks or more to reach the solo standard.

  • 3. Can I reduce the time by studying theory in my home country or by doing two flights per day?

There isn't much theory involved in the First Solo training. However, you can still prepare by watching our training videos, which will help you become familiar with the procedures and the flight training process. Once you enroll, we'll send you the login details so you can access these videos through our online training portal.

Some students are able to handle more than one lesson per day, while others may find it challenging. Especially for beginners, the early lessons involve a lot of new information, and doing two sessions in one day might impact learning and progress. Please keep in mind that flight training is competency-based, students must meet the required standards before progressing to the next lesson.

  • 4. Should I enrol in a training package or choose the Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) option?

Firstly, the training package offers approximately an 8% discount, making it a more cost-effective option if you're looking to save money.

Whether you should choose a package or PAYG also depends on whether you're a local or international student. If you're an international student, we highly recommend going with the package option, we’ll make all your bookings in advance, which is ideal since you’re likely in Australia for a limited time.

For PAYG students, we take a $550 deposit and only make one booking in advance. This option is more suitable for local students who prefer flexibility and can let us know their availability week by week for scheduling.

  • 5. What documents do I need to prepare?

There isn’t much you need to prepare in advance. Most of the required documents can be completed after you arrive in Melbourne. When we send your booking confirmation, we’ll also include all the relevant information to guide you through the process.

  • 6. After completing the First Solo training, what should I do if I want to obtain an RPL?

You don't need to start the RPL training from scratch. You can claim credits for your First Solo training and continue your training by joining the RPL program. You will only need to pay the difference between the First Solo and RPL program costs. For more details, feel free to contact us.

  • 7. Do you offer accommodation for international students?

Yes, we do. Please contact us and let us know your intended check-in and check-out dates, we'll promptly inform you about availability.

Nicolas Goh

“By completing this course I have proven to myself that aviation is something that I enjoy, and can excel in. Completing my first solo gave me an immense boost in confidence. Other than the flying itself, I am grateful for the friendships that I have made with fellow students and instructors at LTF.”
